Beginning The Great Apartment Hunt

Today, while I was off work and already over in St. Louis, I decided it would be a good time to actually start my apartment hunt and look at some places. I know this is a big decision, especially as my plan is to not have a roommate for a change, so I am taking my time and trying to do as much research as possible before deciding anything.  There are a lot of different factors to consider, like where I actually want to live, what places will allow pets, and of course, the amenities and prices of the places I find.

This desire to move out of Illinois and into Missouri may seem a little strange, as my work right now is in Illinois, but I think this type of move will be good and help me to meet new people and try new things. Also, having lived in Illinois for most of my life, there really isn’t anything that great to do (unless it’s bingo or a visit to the movie theater), and lately I’ve been driving to St. Louis for some reason or another at least a couple of times a week… and then still have the drive that takes an eternity back to the Middle of Nowhere, IL.

Armed with a short list of addresses in a couple of neighborhoods, I went exploring, and promptly got a little lost. Luckily, I only stayed lost for a few minutes, as St. Louis isn’t that hard of a place to navigate if you can spot certain landmarks. As I’m not completely ready to commit to any specific place just yet, I mostly just drove around and tried to get a feel for the different parts of St. Louis that are residential.

Right now, the main area I think I want to live in is the Tower Grove/Shaw neighborhood, or somewhere in the vicinity of South City. I like a few things about the area, as it seems pretty safe, the commute to work isn’t too bad, and there is a beautiful park not far away. I am open to other areas, but am probably not trendy enough to live somewhere like the Central West End, U-City or Dogtown. I realized this today after actually looking at a place that was about a block away from Forest Park in a cool building that used to be a hotel.

One of my biggest fears is that I’ll choose the wrong place. Also, I am a little nervous about living on my own in the city, but I think it is way past time to get over that fear and just do it already. My goal is to find a place within the next month or so, and be moved in somewhere around May or at the latest June. Obviously sooner rather than later would be preferable.
